The Door
is Always Open…
Lisa Lowry received her bachelor’s degree in biology from Loyola University of Chicago in 1982. To this educational institution she gives many thanks, as they found a way to offer a quality education to someone that had no means to pay for it. They teach people to fish. She received a Master’s in Immunology and microbiology in 1985, where she credits Dr. Madelaine Cunningham, her advisor, for demonstrating how to take the adversities of life and turn them into opportunities. She learned the value of humble discovery. Never assume you know it all, and what you learn will astound you. She finished her Doctor of Medicine degree at Tulane University, then moved on to complete a residency in Dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine, in 1993. She practiced Dermatology for decades, with small breaks when her painting career took her into more time-consuming gallery work. Painting was, from early childhood, a mechanism of expression which she is grateful to have found. Recently, the camera has beckoned with nearly as loud a voice as the paint brush. Her interactions with her patients taught her a great deal over the years, a privilege she holds dear. When she became a patient herself, with two different cancers within a five-year period, she was afforded the opportunity to see modern medicine from another point of view. With a close eye on research, she is always looking for the simple things we can do to improve our quality of life, and to push beyond surviving to thriving. The door to new discovery is always open, if you are not afraid to walk through. She extends great thanks to all her fellow travelers that taught her how to move from a space of fear and uncertainty, to one of gratitude and appreciation.
